The Benefits of Going Green

Everyone has the  responsibility to keep our environment a safe and abundant place to live. Using eco-friendly products is one part of taking that responsibility seriously.

Environmentally friendly products are typically labeled with an energy-efficient label, which makes them easy to distinguish. It is important to choose a fireplace that follows these standards because they not only protect the environment during their production; they are also safer for household use.

No Emissions

While an electric fireplace provides the same heat and ambiance as  a wood or gas fireplace, it does not create the same messes in the form of ash, storage issues, fire risks and air pollution.

Since electric fireplaces operate without combustion, they are highly efficient and don’t produce emissions that are harmful to the environment. No consumption of wood or fossil fuels is associated with the electric fireplaces to ensure inside air quality.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the fourth largest environmental threat is indoor air quality. The burning of fossil fuels without proper ventilation using a standard, wood-burning fireplace could cause some of these emissions to remain inside, thus reducing inside air quality and posing a threat to your home.

Electric fireplaces, on the other hand, don’t emit fossil fuels. This helps keep both your home and the environment safe.

The chart below shows electric fireplace emissions, as compared with those of wood and gas:

GAS WOOD ELECTRIC
Carbon Dioxide Chlorinated Dioxins NONE
Nitric oxide Carbon Monoxide
Carbon Monoxide Methane
Formaldehyde Nitrogen Oxides
Water Vapor Polycyclic Hydro-Carbons

No Moisture Threat

Some gas fireplaces can produce large amounts of moisture that can potentially lead to mold and other indoor air problems.

According to the Dimplex Green Report, 1.5 gallons of water are produced from every 100,000 BTUs of gas burned. This water can harm your home in the form of mold, which poses the risk of allergies and sickness associated with these by-products. It can also condense and drip into your home, leading to other serious moisture problems requiring a lot of time, attention and money to remedy.

Electric fireplace models such as the Dimplex Chilton not only avoid threats such as moisture, but also contain air purifiers to improve air quality. This Purifire air system circulates around a room up to 12′ by 14,’ and can remove mold spores,  dust, pet dander, pollen and other indoor pollutants.

Removing these pollutants from your home can help assure that the air you breathe is as safe as possible. It also improves environmental safety, since emissions are not sent outdoors.

No Wasted Energy

Electric fireplaces are 100 percent energy efficient, compared to the 50 percent energy efficiency of wood and gas fireplaces. This can be attributed  both to the flame-only option provided and the absence of a standing pilot light.

In addition, the supplemental heating an electric fireplace provides also conserves energy. Instead of using a thermostat, which causes wasted energy and increased electric bills, electric fireplaces heat only the room in which they are placed. This retains heat in its proper place and helps keep you warm.

While pilot lights used in other types of fireplaces often cause problems by not staying lit and posing household danger, they also are not energy efficient. In order for them to work, the pilot light must remain on at all times—which greatly increases the amount of energy needed to run the fireplace.

Electric fireplaces, on the other hand, do not use a standing pilot light because they are a supplemental heating source and do not use a real flame. This makes them safer and cuts back on energy usage.

The Dimplex Green Report explains further the benefits electric fireplaces offer. This report outlines their energy efficiency and other heating aspects that allow them to be classified as “green products,” and helps equip you with additional information so you can understand the nature of eco-friendly products like these.
